In 2020, understanding the world around us and how to take care of it has never been more important. That’s why Art Works Now Summer Camp this year focuses on the environment, nature, and science (all through art of course)! Our weekly camps are catered for children 5 to 12 years of age and will fall into 1 of 3 age groups:

Artists (Littles) | Ages 5-6*
Imaginers (Middles) | Ages 7-8
Dreamers (Bigs) | Ages 9-12

*We are accepting registrations for 5-12 year olds, including children turning 5 in the summer through the end of August.

Art Works Now campers will explore a variety of age-appropriate art-making techniques, learn about new materials and artists, play creative thinking games, and have outdoor play! We will be venturing out to some of the amazing local artistic and natural resources in our community. Our campers can look forward to new friendships, games, in-house special guests, water play days, and a culminating art show at the end of the week.

Art Works Now has been providing access to quality art education programs since 2011 and is committed to reducing financial barriers so that everyone benefits from creativity and art making. Art Works Now Weekly Themes

Week 1: June 22 – June 26

Earth Rocks
What is this planet we call home all about? Campers will learn about the composition of the earth, geology, and best of all – dirt! Artistic activities will include creating art with clay and with actual dirt. Remember making mudpies? We think everyone should get to make at least one in their childhood! Before our kids take on the responsibilities of stewardship of this great planet, we thought it’d be a great idea for them to understand exactly what makes the earth so special.

Week 2: June 29 – July 3

Don’t Forget to Look Up
Think of the sky, air, wind, and even your breath. “That’s what this week’s campers will be exploring as they consider cloud formations, clean air, ways to keep our air clean, and how we can use the air that we breathe in and out to achieve a peaceful state of mind.

Week 3: July 6 – July 10

Water Whirled
Our bodies and our planet are all made up of a LOT of water! Campers will explore water through a variety of lenses including biology, geography, and environmental sustainability. We’ll learn about water as a life-giving substance, as the living environments of rivers and oceans, and the preciousness of every delicious drop.

Week 4: July 13 – July 17

Let it Shine
How do we begin to understand that giant fireball that keeps us warm, provides light in the day, and guides us through the seasons? This week’s campers will explore everything from solar energy to rainbows, shadows, and the role of fires in our environment.

Week 5: July 20 – July 24

Speak for the Trees
A healthy planet requires a healthy ecosystem full of plant life. This week our campers will get up close and personal with their friendly neighborhood flora – especially those big giant trees that provide us with so many benefits. But a healthy planet isn’t complete without healthy plants of all kinds. So we’ll explore gardening, moss, and much more!

Week 6: July 27 – July 31

I ❤ Bugs
Many of us have learned just how important bees are to our food supply. But bees aren’t the only bugs that make the planet a better place! Campers will have the chance to make friends with their community’s critters through sculpture, painting, and printmaking.

Week 7: August 3 – August 7

Fur, Feathers, and Scales
What is the meaning of biodiversity? Why is life on our planet so amazing and what makes every type of living thing special? This week our campers will learn about a variety of different species that inhabit the planet, celebrating the unique ways each of them contributes to our beautiful world.

Week 8: August 10 – August 14

Curious Minds & Healthy Humans
What if the human body came with an owner’s manual kids could understand at any age? Our campers this week will create their own individualized owner’s manuals based on explorations of the systems that make us who we are. We’ll be thinking about brains and hearts; tummies and lungs; and our biggest organ…the skin! And believe it or not, we’ll have plenty of artists to guide us on our explorations.

Week 9: August 17 – August 21

Global Neighbors
They say that it’s a small world, and that is becoming increasingly more so as technology connects us across continents and over seas, through multiple time zones and even on different days. What connects us with our global neighbors? How are we more alike than different, and how do our differences make the world more beautiful? Here at home, who are our neighbors and where do they come from? How can we care for one another right here in our neighborhoods?

Week 10: August 24 – August 28

Life in My Back Yard
It all comes together right in your own back yard! Step outside your door and you’ve got earth, sky, water, sun, plants, animals, and humans! How do we all live together in harmony? This week’s campers will show us the way with a variety of artistic explorations and prescriptions for making the world nearest each of us just a little bit more friendly and welcoming.

Week 11: August 31 – September 4
